The event, which marked the commencement of international operations at the airport, also signified a historic development in the state’s Hajj operations, as pilgrims departed directly from their home base for the first time.
Speaking on the development on Monday in Abeokuta, the Secretary-General of the Ogun State Muslim Council, Asiwaju Kamal’deen Akintunde, commended Gov. Dapo Abiodun for his visionary leadership in ensuring that the airport meets international standards.
He noted that the development has eliminated the logistical challenges traditionally faced by pilgrims, describing the airport as a functional gateway for religious and commercial activities.
Akintunde recalled that he had earlier projected that the airport would serve the pilgrimage needs of both Muslim and Christian faithful, expressing satisfaction that the vision was beginning to materialise.
He described the commencement of international flights through Hajj operations as a positive sign for the sustainability of future domestic, international and cargo services.
While applauding the achievement, he urged the state government to ensure the completion of all ongoing facilities at the airport and to prioritise proper maintenance to sustain global standards.
Akintunde also charged the intending pilgrims to conduct themselves as worthy ambassadors of their faith and the country during their stay in Saudi Arabia.
He further urged them to pray for Nigeria, particularly for peace, economic stability and for leaders to be guided with wisdom in addressing national challenges.
