In a major political development ahead of the 2027 general elections, Honorable Oladipupo Adebutu has officially emerged as the consensus governorship candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State.
Adebutu’s candidacy was finalized on Sunday in Abeokuta following a unified decision by party leaders, executive members, and stakeholders to present him as the sole flag bearer to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In his acceptance speech delivered immediately after his emergence, Adebutu expressed deep gratitude to the party faithful for their unwavering confidence in his leadership, drawing parallels to the contentious 2023 gubernatorial race.
“ I therefore extend my deep appreciation to you all, our leaders, executive members at all levels, stakeholders, and members of our party for being unequivocal in your decision to present my humble
self as your consensus candidate and flag bearer for the good people of Ogun State in the2027 general elections, just as you did in 2023, which we believe we won through yourvotes but were denied through manipulation” he said.
Optimistic about the upcoming electoral cycle, he added: "However, this time in 2027, I believe in God that your votes will count and will put me in office as your duly elected Governor."
Acknowledging the internal alignment that led to his selection, Adebutu praised fellow party aspirants who stepped down for the greater good of the party.
He emphasized that the PDP’s path to the government house depends entirely on internal cohesion and peaceful conduct.
“In the spirit of unity, let me, on behalf of all the candidates whom you have also chosen
by consensus at various levels, thank all our brothers and sisters who also aspired to
various positions but, for the corporate interest and future success of our party, willingly
made concessions and withdrew for our collective good and peace”he said.
"There is no loser among us; we have all won for the party and for the good people of Ogun State."
The governorship hopeful lamented that despite Ogun State's strategic geographical location and abundance of natural and human resources, its citizens continue to endure hardship.
“The All Progressives Congress (APC) has been in government in Ogun State for over a decade and a half under different nomenclatures, holding our dear state under siege while our people groan under hardship. Whereas we live in abundance
and surplus, and have been blessed with both natural and human resources, we are
strategically and geographically positioned within the country. Yet, our state remains in
dire need of competent leadership with ingenuity, purpose, and direction”.
Declaring the 2027 election a "must-win" for the opposition party, Adebutu assured residents that the PDP is fully prepared to offer an alternative blueprint for governance, promising that the party's official policy direction will be unveiled in due course.
“Our collective responsibility now should be focused on returning our party to the seat of power in Oke-Mosan in order to rescue our people from suffering and maladministration”.
