Whyte disclosed this during an interview with newsmen in Abeokuta on Wednesday.
He expressed worry over what he described as the “unfair and exploitative” actions of some estate agents, which he said have worsened the struggles of Nigerians already facing economic hardship.
He stressed that urgent regulations are needed to protect tenants and prospective landlords.
“ Several tenants and house seekers have raised complaints about the skyrocketing cost of rent in various parts of Ogun State, with many unable to afford decent accommodation due to unfair practices in the housing market”.
He noted that beyond the rising rent, the activities of certain agents have become a burden on people, as they demand outrageous inspection fees and other hidden charges without guaranteeing access to suitable housing.
“People are complaining about the high cost of housing. Some of these agents take people on inspection to properties they don’t even like and still collect huge amounts of money. This is not fair to many Nigerians who are struggling to make a living
“Infact some agents takes you to houses that they don't even have authority to rent out just to collect inspection fee from you”.
Amb. Whyte called on Governor Abiodun, the Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, and the Commissioner for Housing to collectively intervene and ensure policies are put in place to regulate the sector for the benefit of citizens.
He also urged the state government to consider a framework that will set clear guidelines for estate agents, including inspection fees, transparent service delivery, and affordable rent models to ease the burden on tenants.
“ Housing is a fundamental human need, and as such, the government has a duty to ensure citizens are not exploited by individuals who place profit above the well-being of the people”.
He assured that the Ogun Youth Assembly will continue to speak up on issues affecting the lives of young people and the general public, adding that accommodation challenges directly impact productivity, welfare, and the quality of life of residents.
