Speaker of the Ogun State House Assembly, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide has announced the formation of a new committee known as the Legislative Compliance Committee to assess the implementation of laws formulated by the lawmakers in the state.Elemide, while hosting members of the Consolidated Chapel of Ogun NUJ at the assembly complex in Abeokuta on Thursday said the committee was established through a resolution of the house.
According to the Speaker, the primary objective of this committee is to monitor the effectiveness of existing laws by conducting thorough inspections and ensuring proper implementation.
While acknowledging that law enforcement is not within the direct purview of the assembly, Elemide stressed the critical importance of ensuring that laws are adhered to, as he expressed concerns that without adequate implementation, there is a risk of people acting with impunity.
The Speaker noted that the new Legislative Compliance Committee is set to embark on a comprehensive review process to guarantee that the laws passed by the assembly are being enforced and respected.
Elemide said “We have formed a committee called the Legislative compliance committee via a resolution of the house. The committee is to measure the implementation of the laws made by the lawmakers.
“The committee will go around to ensure that the laws are effective. Though enforcement of law is not part of our duty but if the laws are not properly implemented people will do things with impunity”, he added.
Elemide, while reacting to the current fuel scarcity across the country, stated that the Federal government must ensure that the benefits of the removal directly impact the masses.
Hon. Elemide noted that certain individuals were taking advantage of the subsidy, acting as custodians of the public's wealth, hence the removal.
The Speaker equally questioned the logic of subsidising fuel while neglecting crucial sectors such as agriculture and health.
Elemide stated that there is a need to prioritize subsidies that would have a more significant and tangible impact on the lives of the people.
