The institution, which operates under the Nigerian Correctional Service, is a specialized youth detention and correctional facility focused on the rehabilitation and reformation of juvenile offenders through formal education and vocational training, rather than punitive imprisonment.
Leading the outreach on Sunday in Abeokuta, the Coordinator of ADKAM Beneficiaries, Mr. Lamidi Akorede Felix, said the donation was organized to honour Alhaji Kamarudeen Olawale on his birthday while supporting the development and welfare of the young residents of the institution.
The outreach, sponsored by Prof. Adebboyega lateef Sulaiman , saw the donation of food items, educational materials and vocational tools aimed at improving the welfare and skill acquisition programmes available to the young residents of the institution.
“We are here today to celebrate the birthday of Alhaji Kamarudeen Olawale by extending love and support to these young people. We believe that giving back to society is one of the best ways to mark such a special occasion,” Felix said.
He explained that the outreach also included educational materials for inmates who are not too good in academic studies, as well as vocational tools designed to strengthen skill acquisition programmes within the facility.
“As an organization, we recognize the importance of education and vocational training in shaping the future of these youths. That is why we donated writing materials for students and equipment that will help them acquire practical skills for self-reliance after rehabilitation.
"The vocational donations included sewing machines and accessories for the tailoring unit, filing machines for the shoemaking section, carpentry tools, clippers and barbing equipment for the barbing unit, as well as irons and other materials for the laundry and dry-cleaning department".
Also speaking during the visit, one of the committee member of the group Miss Aanuoluwapo Elizabeth Olusoji said the outreach was organized as a humanitarian service to celebrate the birthday of their leader, Hon. Kamorudeen Olawale Yusuf, whose life has been dedicated to charity and helping the less privileged.
“We decided to celebrate our leader’s birthday with these juveniles because our principal is someone who loves charity and constantly extends support to the less privileged in society. This outreach is in line with the values he represents,” she said.
Miss Olusoji explained that the vocational tools were deliberately selected to motivate juveniles who may not excel in academics, giving them opportunities to acquire practical skills and become self-reliant after completing their rehabilitation programme.
“The vocational tools were provided to encourage those who may not be academically inclined to learn a trade of their choice. With these skills, they can become productive and useful members of society when they leave the institution. Skill acquisition remains one of the most effective pathways to empowerment and reintegration,” she added.
She expressed optimism that the donated items would contribute significantly to the institution’s educational and vocational training programmes, while helping the young inmates develop the confidence and capabilities needed to build successful lives after their stay at the facility.
