Akinde made the commendation on Monday during a press conference to herald the institution’s 23rd Convocation Ceremony scheduled to hold on Wednesday at the campus in Ogun State.
The rector revealed that no fewer than 233 students of the polytechnic have already benefited from the loan scheme, which he said has helped many continue their academic journey without disruption.
He said “ NELFUND is already making a significant difference in the lives of our students. Some who would have been denied access to examinations were able to sit for their papers because their names appeared on the NELFUND list. Without that intervention, many of them would have missed those opportunities.”
Akinde added that the institution has also strengthened its work-study programme for indigent students as part of efforts to ensure no willing learner is left behind.
“We operate a work-study scheme for indigent students. Anyone unable to pay fees can enrol and support themselves through structured work within the institution” he said.
Speaking on activities lined up for the convocation, the rector highlighted the Innovation and Project Exhibition as a major highlight of the celebration. According to him, the exhibition will showcase the institution’s research output and student-driven innovations.
“The exhibition is our way of showing the world what we have achieved over the years. From cutting-edge technology to practical solutions, these projects reflect our commitment to excellence and real-world relevance,” he stated.
Akinde stressed the importance of collaboration with industries, noting that local production of innovative products could reduce dependence on imports.
“If we strengthen collaboration and mass-produce some of these innovations, Nigeria will reduce reliance on imports from countries like China and Taiwan. We want industries to see how technological institutions can support them,” he
said.
The Rector also announced that the Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, the Governor of Katsina State, Dikko Umaru Radda, the Alake of Egbaland, Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, and the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Rasheed Ladoja, will be conferred with the Polytechnic’s Honorary Fellowship at the Convocation Ceremony.
Also speaking, the Director of Research and Development, Dr Odunlami, described the exhibition as a demonstration of the power of research and innovation in solving real-life problems.
“This exhibition stands as a testament to the transformative power of research and innovation in addressing real-world challenges. The projects showcased here reflect not only technical competence but also the vision, dedication, and collaborative spirit of our participants” he said.
He emphasised that innovation is essential in a rapidly changing global environment.
“Fostering a culture of research is no longer optional. It is essential for sustainable development and economic growth. This exhibition provides an avenue for students, researchers, and innovators to translate ideas into tangible outcomes, encouraging interdisciplinary thinking and problem-solving,” he said.
