This was disclosed in a press release jointly signed by Onakpa Emmanuel Foundation, renowned child rights and Chairman Ogun Youth Assembly Ambassador Habeeb Whyte and the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASSUS) issued to newsmen on Monday.
The organisers disclosed that the competition is designed to enhance students’ vocabulary, improve communication skills, and encourage a culture of reading and intellectual engagement among secondary school students across the state.
According to the organisers, the Spelling Bee competition will also provide a platform for young learners to build confidence, develop public speaking abilities, and participate in healthy academic competition that aligns with the vision of strengthening education and nurturing future leaders.
The championship is scheduled to hold on March 25, 2026, at the ASSUS Secretariat Hall in Leme, Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, with the programme expected to commence at 9:00 a.m. prompt.
A total of ten schools have been selected to participate in the maiden edition of the competition, comprising five private schools and five public secondary schools across the state.
The private schools invited include Taidob College, Brightway College, Alaba Lawson School, Patterson Memorial College, and De-Gifted Private School, while the public schools listed for the competition are MarkJob Secondary School, Baptist Boys High School, Abeokuta Grammar School, Abeokuta Girls Grammar School, and Afro Grams Secondary School.
Each participating school will be represented by one student contestant accompanied by a teacher, while the event is expected to attract education stakeholders, teachers, and supporters of academic development within and beyond Ogun State.
The organisers expressed optimism that the Ogun State Secondary School Spelling Bee Championship will become a major annual academic event in the state, celebrating intellectual excellence and contributing to the continuous improvement of educational standards.
