In a condolence message jointly signed by the Chairman of the council, Comrade Wale Olanrewaju, and the Secretary, Comrade Bunmi Adigun, the NUJ said the late Chief Mrs. Onabanjo lived a life of dignity, strength and quiet service, which endeared her to many within and outside the state.
The union noted that the deceased stood firmly beside her husband, the late Chief Bisi Onabanjo, a renowned journalist and former public office holder whose contributions to journalism and public life remain indelible. According to the NUJ, Chief Bisi Onabanjo distinguished himself in the media profession through courage, integrity and an unwavering commitment to truth.
The statement recalled that Chief Bisi Onabanjo’s career in journalism helped shape public discourse and set enduring standards for the profession in Nigeria, while his mentorship and guidance inspired many journalists, particularly in Ogun State, where he is widely regarded as a media icon and statesman.
The Ogun NUJ also acknowledged the Onabanjo family for preserving and upholding the ideals and legacy of their patriarch over the years, noting the family’s continued support for the journalism community and commitment to the values of service, excellence and integrity.
“As journalists across Ogun State mourn with the family, we pray that Almighty God grants them the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss and comforts them in this moment of grief,”.
The union prayed for the peaceful repose of the soul of Chief Mrs. Lucia Onabanjo and expressed hope that the enduring legacies of the Onabanjo family would continue to inspire generations to come.
