The call was made by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the CDHR, Mr. Femi Falana, SAN, who was represented by a board member, Mr. Malachy Ugwummadu, during the CDHR Annual General Conference held at the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Secretariat in Leme, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Mr. Falana expressed concern over the persistent challenge of widespread corruption in the country, noting that it continues to undermine the rule of law despite Nigeria’s democratic governance. He urged CDHR members to remain vigilant and intensify their monitoring of government activities to ensure strict adherence to legal and constitutional provisions.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Dr. Lanre Ogunlowo, represented by Chief Superintendent of Police, Mr. Goddy Iteyere, and the Commander of the Ogun State Security Network Agency, So-Safe Corps, Mr. Soji Ganzallo, represented by his assistant, Mr. Adegbuyi Adegunwa, reaffirmed the readiness of security agencies to support lawful civic engagement.
They emphasized that security agencies are not opposed to peaceful protests by registered organizations, provided such activities do not threaten public order. They further pledged continued collaboration with the CDHR in the protection of human rights through prompt handling of petitions, investigations, prosecution of offenders, and enforcement of accountability.
In their goodwill messages, the Chairman of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) in Ogun State, Mr. Popoola Samson, the Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Akeem Lasisi, and a representative of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr. Chris Omoni, commended the CDHR for its sustained advocacy against human rights abuses. They assured the organization of ongoing support from labour unions in its quest to promote justice and equity across the country.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Conference Planning Committee, Comrade Yinka Folarin, welcomed delegates from different parts of Nigeria and reiterated the CDHR’s commitment to monitoring rights violations, offering legal support to victims, and raising public awareness through education on citizens’ rights and the importance of the rule of law.
