In what can only be described as a night of African football royalty, Nigeria’s national women’s team—the Super Falcons—etched their names deeper into the annals of sporting history by winning their 10th African Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) title. But this wasn’t just another title; this was La Décima, a milestone triumph that confirms Nigeria’s unquestionable dominance in African women’s football.
The final against host nation Morocco was not for the faint-hearted. Down by two goals, with the full force of a roaring home crowd cheering against them, the Nigerian team pulled off a stunning 3–2 comeback victory, defying expectations and silencing doubters. Their performance was a masterclass in resilience, determination, and national pride.
This triumph was more than just a game. It was a symbol of the Nigerian spirit—bold, unyielding, and fearless. No one thought they could come back. But they did. And they did it in style.
As we celebrate this phenomenal achievement, it is my considered opinion that it is time we honour this golden generation of champions with a new and befitting identity. The name Super Falcons, while historic, no longer captures the majesty and dominance these women represent.
I propose that they be officially rebranded as the Super Queens of Africa.
Why? Because they have not only conquered the pitch—they have reigned over the continent. They are not just players; they are trailblazers, icons, and queens in their own right. Their ten continental titles are not just numbers; they are crowns—each one earned through blood, sweat, strategy, and sheer willpower.
This new title would serve as a symbol of honour and empowerment. It tells every girl in Africa that royalty is not born—it is forged on the field of battle, through hard work, discipline, and excellence. It raises the profile of women's football, not just in Nigeria but across Africa, and sets a standard for future generations to aspire to.
Let this name change become a part of our national legacy. Let us elevate these champions in a way that matches their accomplishments. Let their story inspire every young Nigerian girl to know that she too can rise, reign, and rewrite history.
The Super Falcons have served us well.
But now, they deserve a crown.
