The case of Saheed Adenuga, a dedicated rights activist, brings to light the pervasive blackmail, extortion, and violence faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in Nigeria. In a nation where same-sex relationships are criminalized, those who stand up for marginalized communities are often at severe risk.
Saheed Adenuga has devoted years to fighting for the rights of marginalized groups within his community. His unwavering commitment to social justice, however, has made him a target for ruthless criminals.
Recently, Adenuga fell victim to an elaborate trap set by a notorious group known as the “Kitto guys.” This group collaborates with corrupt law enforcement officers to exploit LGBTQ+ individuals. Lured under false pretenses to a meeting in Abeokuta, Adenuga was ambushed. During this terrifying ordeal, he was robbed of his personal belongings, including his phones, laptop, and cash, and was subjected to appalling humiliation and sexual assault.
His life was spared only due to the intervention of an elderly man, who prevented an enraged mob from carrying out a lynching. Instead of receiving the protection he desperately needed, Adenuga faced further harassment. The Kitto guys, alongside corrupt officials, threatened him with legal action for violating Nigeria's strict anti-LGBTQ+ laws, which could result in a 14-year prison sentence.
Faced with continual threats and the very real likelihood of an unjust trial, Adenuga made the agonizing decision to flee Nigeria in January 2025. The fear of persecution and imprisonment drove him to seek asylum in a safer environment, leaving behind his work and the community he had tirelessly fought to protect.
Saheed Adenuga’s experience is a stark reminder of the ongoing dangers faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in Nigeria. His story calls attention to the urgent need for global advocacy and support for those fleeing persecution. As the struggle for human rights continues, it is crucial to stand with those like Adenuga who seek safety and justice far from home.
Readers are encouraged to support organizations that assist LGBTQ+ individuals facing similar threats and to advocate for policies that uphold human rights for everyone, irrespective of sexual orientation.
