The candidate of Labour Party (LP) for the Abeokuta South Federal Constituency election in 2023, Tolulope Phillips, has called on elected leaders at all levels of government to recommit themselves to good governance to entrench democracy.
Phillips who made this call in his message to greet Nigerians on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Nigeria's democracy also charged leaders to be loyal to the people by ensuring that they deliver on their campaign promises.
Phillips, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state said political leaders must fulfil their obligations to the public and not let the people down.
"This day marks a significant milestone in our collective journey towards a just, equitable, and democratic society.
"Democracy day is more than a public holiday; it is a powerful reminder of our shared commitment to the principles of freedom, justice, and the rule of law. It is a day to honour the sacrifices of those who have fought tirelessly for the democratic values we hold dear and to reflect on the progress we have made as a nation.
"Therefore, as we celebrate Nigeria's 25 years of uninterrupted democratic rule, our elected leaders must shun all acts that can truncate a peaceful civil rule and continue to uphold the tenant of democracy.
"Our leaders must be committed to serving the people. They must ensure good governance, this is the way to make democracy strong.
"Today, we celebrate the resilience and unity that have brought us this far. Our democracy thrives on the diverse voices and perspectives that make up our great nation. It is through our collective efforts that we continue to build a society where every individual can enjoy their fundamental rights and freedoms.
"As we commemorate this important day, we also acknowledge the challenges that lie ahead. Let us remain steadfast in our resolve to address these challenges with integrity, courage, and a spirit of collaboration. Together, we can ensure that our democracy remains robust, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of all citizens.
"I encourage everyone to take this opportunity to reflect on the true meaning of democracy and to renew our commitment to upholding its values. Let us honor the legacy of those who have paved the way for our democratic freedoms and work towards a future where these freedoms are preserved and enhanced for generations to come", Phillips said.
