Oludotun disclosed that in the past three years, the state has planted over three million trees in collaboration with more than 40 corporate bodies, individuals, and groups.
He made this known during the second edition of Ogun State Tree Planting Day, held in Okemosan, Abeokuta and co-hosted by the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Forestry.
The event was attended by the Commissioner for Environment, Mr Ola Oresanya, HoS represented by Permanent Secretary of Forestry among others
While speaking on the theme “Plant Trees, Sustain Life,” the Commissioner described trees as the lungs of the planet, essential for providing oxygen, preventing soil erosion, regulating water cycles, and supporting biodiversity.
The Commissioner encouraged residents to plant and nurture trees in their homes, schools, and communities, adding that such efforts would ensure cleaner air, abundant water, and a healthier environment for future generations.
According to him, "Trees are the lungs of our planet, providing oxygen, shade, and sustenance for all living beings. They are a symbol of life, growth, and sustainability. As we stand here, let's reflect on the significance of trees to our ecosystem. They absorb carbon dioxide, produce oxygen, and support biodiversity. Trees also prevent soil erosion, regulate water cycles, and provide habitat for countless species."
"However, our actions have taken a toll on our forests. Deforestation, climate change, and human activities have threatened the very existence of our trees. It's time for us to take responsibility and act. Planting trees is not just a noble act; it's a necessity. By doing so, we're investing in our planet's future. We're ensuring cleaner air, more abundant water, and a healthier environment for generations to come."
"The Ministry of Forestry is not resting on its oars when it comes to tree planting. In the last three years, we have planted over 3 million trees. We have also partnered with over 40 Corporate bodies, individuals and groups to ensure more trees are planted in the State.", Oludotun concluded.
