The claims, first reported by PUNCH Healthwise, specifically mentioned health centers in Magboro, Ibafo, and Mowe as the alleged culprits. The report sparked widespread concern, prompting swift action from the local government authorities.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Director of Information for OOLG, Prince Segun Soneye, disclosed that the council has summoned all relevant stakeholders, including some of the affected pregnant women, to probe the matter and take necessary action.
The statement reads:The attention of the Obafemi Owode Local Government (OOLG) has been drawn to an allegation published by PUNCH Healthwise, claiming that healthcare officials at Magboro, Ibafo, and Mowe Health Centres demanded fuel or its monetary equivalent from expectant mothers before delivery.
“In response, the Local Government has summoned all relevant stakeholders, including some pregnant women registered at the affected health centers, for a thorough investigation and appropriate action on the matter.
“While we remain committed to ensuring quality healthcare services for our residents, we find it necessary to emphasize the importance of balanced reporting. It would have been expected of PUNCH Healthwise to contact the Local Government for clarification before publishing such claims.
“We assure the public of a transparent and unbiased investigation. Updates will be provided as we work to ascertain the true facts of the matter. “
