Obasanjo disclosed this during the kick-off of Oba Matemilola Under 15 Annual Football Competition on Sunday.
He expressed his gratitude for his continued ability to remain active and highlighted the multifaceted benefits of sports, especially for the youth.
"Grace of God, God has been extremely kind to me, that at this age, I can still move around without a third leg, and I thank God for it," Obasanjo remarked.
He emphasized the importance of physical exercise for maintaining a sound mind and body, noting his routine of playing sports three times a week.
The former president underscored the social benefits of such events, stating, "There's what I call social interaction; you can see all of us here, young and old, jumping together, laughing together—nothing can be better than that."
He praised the event for promoting good health, sports, and social cohesion, adding, "Normally, on location, you see the Olowu on the throne; here is the Olowu in the field."
Meanwhile Oba Adelola Matemilola, the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, elaborated on the structure and future plans for the sports initiative.
"This year, for the first phase, we signed up 14 teams, all under 15, and we have had assurances from our sponsors," he said.
The Monarch announced plans to expand the competition beyond Abeokuta and its surrounding areas to eventually encompass the entire Ogun State.
He added that the initiative will include other sports like athletics, aiming to engage youth and develop their talents.
Chief Oluseyi Adediran, the coordinator and Akinlagun of Owu Kingdom, expressed the broader objectives of the competition.
"We want to achieve more unity and promote sports in Owu Kingdom. We have a lot of young ones hanging everywhere, and we are bringing this together to start what we call Owu Sports Center," Adediran explained.
"The center will facilitate various sports activities, including table tennis, long tennis, volleyball, and handball, to train young talents and potentially produce champions in different fields.
His words " The initiative has garnered support from various quarters, including the Commissioner for Sports and Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun.
"The event also attracted notable figures like former Super Eagles coach Bonfrere Jo, who has shown interest in the competition.
"The first scorer of the competition will receive the Bonfrere Jo Award, along with accolades for the winning team's coach and the man of the match."
