The passage of the Resolution titled: "H.R No. 132/OG/2025- Call for the Inclusion of Sign Language Interpretation in State Government Programmes to Promote Inclusivity for Persons with Hearing Impairment", followed a debate by the lawmakers on the desirability of the proposed initiative.
Opening the debate on the motion leading to the passage of the resolution, the Sponsor, Hon. Babatunde Tella noted that the inclusion of sign language interpretation in State Government programmes would reinforce the commitment of the State Government to upholding the rights of persons with disabilities as enshrined in national and international human rights frameworks.
Other lawmakers including Honourables Omolola Bakare, Kashamu Rasheed and the Minority Leader Lukman Adeleye urged the State Government to mandate organisers of all the State government-organized programmes, including executive, legislative, and judicial functions, to have a certified sign language interpreter included to communicate with the deaf and mute.
They urged all relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), including the Ministry of Information and Strategy and the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, to ensure compliance to the proposed resolution.
