The monarch made the commendation while speaking with newsmen in Abeokuta on Thursday.
He expressed his delight over the successful hosting of the prestigious sporting event, tagged Gateway Games, noting that it reflects the commitment of the state government to youth development, sports excellence, and national unity through sports.
Oba Saheed Agbaje particularly commended the state-of-the-art sporting facilities being utilized for the festival, describing them as “world-class” and capable of competing with any modern sports infrastructure across the country.
He said the facilities not only showcase Ogun State’s readiness to host large-scale events but also demonstrate the government’s vision for long-term sports development.
According to the traditional ruler, the hosting of the festival is a great honour to the people of Ogun State, especially the youths, many of whom now have the opportunity to witness a national sporting event of such magnitude firsthand. He described it as a morale booster for aspiring athletes across the state.
The Monarch noted that the Gateway Games have attracted attention from all corners of Nigeria, thereby boosting tourism, hospitality, and local commerce in Abeokuta and other parts of the state.
“The national festival being held in our dear state is a landmark achievement. I sincerely commend our amiable governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for this initiative. It shows that the administration values not just sports but also youth engagement, economic development, and national integration.”
The royal father urged the youths of Ogun State to take advantage of the opportunities provided by the games, both in terms of participation and inspiration.
He stated that sports could serve as a powerful platform for discovering talents and launching successful careers both locally and internationally.
He also called on stakeholders in the sports sector, including private investors, to support the state’s drive towards becoming a leading hub for sports development in Nigeria.
According to him, Governor Abiodun’s administration has already laid a strong foundation that can be built upon for future success.
Speaking further, Oba Saheed Agbaje urged young people across Ogun State to shun cultism and all forms of social vices, and instead focus on developing their talents through sports and other positive activities.
He emphasized that the Gateway Games offer a golden opportunity for self-discovery and national exposure.
“This is the time for our youths to rise and shine. I urge them to completely reject cultism and all that comes with it. The future lies in hard work, talent, and discipline—not violence or crime,” he said.
The royal father said Governor Abiodun has “brought a light to sporting activities” in the state, reigniting interest in athletics and creating a vibrant platform for young people to harness their potential and be celebrated for their talents.
