Olanrewaju delivered a lecture at the workshop organised by the Federal Road Safety Corps( FRSC) held at the Command's headquarters in Abeokuta on Friday.
He explained that public enlightenment remained the greatest process of informing and educating the public about the importance of road safety and measures to prevent accidents.
The state NUJ chairman stressed that public enlightenment encompassed various strategies, including public awareness campaigns, education programmes, community outreach and media engagement.
He noted that public enlightenment played a vital role in reducing road traffic deaths by educating and raising awareness among road users about safe driving practices and obeying traffic rules and regulations.
Olanrewaju urged FRSC and all stakeholders to prioritise public enlightenment initiatives and work together towards creating a safer motoring environment for everyone in the state and Nigeria at large.
" By providing quality education, we promote accurate information and foster a culture of road safety, encouraging individuals on best practices and how to prioritise safety on the roads.
" Enlightenment campaigns can drive people to support the implementation of road safety policies and regulations, increasing public awareness and compliance.
" Public enlightenment campaigns promote responsible driving practices, such as avoiding speeding, drunk-driving, distracted driving and focus on pedestrian safety.
"I urge the FRSC and all stakeholders to prioritize public enlightenment initiatives and work together towards creating a safer motoring environment for everyone in the State and Nigeria at large," he said.
The Ogun Sector Commander, Anthony Uga, represented by the Deputy Corps Commander, Head of Operations, Adelaja Ogungbemi, emphasised the importance of public education in preventing crashes.
He noted that the FRSC prioritised public enlightenment and had established a public enlightenment officer position to ensure the continuity of public education.
Ogungbemi advised journalists and other agencies to obey FRSC rules and regulations, stating that the corps would continue to engage in public enlightenment and enforcement to reduce road traffic crashes.
