The Ogun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has commended the Chairman of Abeokuta North Local Government, Dr. Lanre Oyegbola-Sodipo, for what it describes as a remarkable first year in office marked by impactful governance, infrastructural renewal, and people-oriented reforms.
This was disclosed on Thursday in a statement signed by the Chairman, Comrade Wale Olanrewaju, and Secretary, Comrade Bunmi Adigun .
The union praised Dr. Oyegbola-Sodipo for delivering purposeful leadership that has significantly improved the socioeconomic landscape of the local government.
According to NUJ, Dr. Oyegbola-Sodipo commissioned 17 legacy projects that underscore his commitment to grassroots development.
“These projects include the renovation of a two-classroom block at St. Paul Primary School, the conversion of an abandoned building into a Skills Acquisition and Enterprise Development Centre, installation of solar-powered boreholes, construction of public toilets, rehabilitation of the local government secretariat, and refurbishment of the marriage registry.
“Beyond infrastructure, Dr. Oyegbola-Sodipo has also taken a firm stand on environmental health. He personally led a clean-up and enforcement drive against open defecation, illegal waste dumping, and unauthorized constructions.
“ This hands-on approach demonstrates his resolve to restore order, protect public health, and improve the living conditions of residents.
“On the fiscal front, his administration has overhauled the local government’s revenue system with a new digital tracking model. By canceling outdated revenue collection contracts, increasing identified revenue points, and introducing a fair, pump-based taxation system for petrol stations, he has improved transparency and efficiency in local government finances.
“In social welfare, Dr. Oyegbola-Sodipo has launched a dedicated elderly care initiative, “Eto Ilera ati Itoju Awon Agba,” targeting 2,000 senior citizens. This program provides subsidized meals, transport for medical appointments, and recreational opportunities, addressing both the health and social needs of aged community members.
“His administration has also made bold strides in education. At the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration, teachers and administrators from Abeokuta North won top honours, reflecting his investment in teacher welfare and learning environments. Students in public primary schools now benefit from refurbished facilities and improved resources, while educators are properly recognized and supported.
“Finally, Dr. Oyegbola-Sodipo’s dedication has earned him the prestigious Local Government Chairman of the Year award at the South West Investment Summit and Advancement Awards.
“The Ogun NUJ looks forward to continuing its partnership with Dr. Oyegbola-Sodipo’s administration and stands ready to support his vision for a more prosperous, healthy, and well-governed Abeokuta North”.
